My husband insisted he re-wire the house himself, hwoever he ended up getting a minor electrical shock in the process of it all. I decided to find a re-wiring contractor by using Constructiondeal.com and I was able to find a great affordable professional to help with our re-wiring needs in no time.
I'm considering rewiring and amplifying my cable signal to boost the reception on most of my television sets. I get some moderate snowy reception on a couple of channels (even worse with the VCR plugged up), plus the older cable is RG59 being ran at 50 feet and sometimes closer to 100 feet currently. It's not horrible but I want the best I can get within reason.
Currently, I have 4 TVs and 1 cable modem (with the unlikely possibility of adding 1-2 more sets). I have several questions concerning this procedure.
1) My cable comes up through the ground and then is currently split 4 ways right there outside. One split line goes directly to the modem via 100ft of RG6 cable.
Can I run the main cable line further using an RG6 cable either under the house or into the attic and then amplify and then split the signal? Or will this degrade the signal too much before amplifying?
2) Can I run the cable modem off of the amplified splitter? Or is this a risky idea and I should split the signal 2-ways first. There's a link to the booster I was looking at on the bottom of the post.
3) The 4 way boosts signals 7db while the 8 way boosts signals 4db. Are these significant improvements in dbs? After splitting the cable run will be 15-50 feet at the most.
4) Any disadvantages to using an amplifier, other than the work involved?
Your splitters do not AMPLIFY the signal, that marking you see on your splitter is the LOSS in decibles you are getting through the splitter. If you add an amp to your current system, you are amplifying your signal AND the noise, so it is NOT going to be any better.
Amplify the signal before any spliting or long runs. This is best because amplifying fuzz just gets you extra fuzz... If there is a modem in the picture split the signal one to the modem the other to the amplifier. Modems are very picky on the signal strength (which can also be too high if amplified before the modem)
Cheers for a very good post. You have given me satisfaction to every post i read here. Hope you keep on sharing relevant information to all your readers.
I to had the same problem. I bought the amplified splitter ran son new lines only to find out that this did not change a thing. Called the cable company three time to get this corrected. Problem...The line outside the house was over 20 years old and degraded. They replaced the line and problem solved. Oh by the way you cannot amplify signal to a cable modem. It simply will not work. Good Luck. Want to buy a slightly use amplifier?
In terms of rewiring your house, it's a royal pain in the ass to install or replace wire. If you look to run tv's or cable boxes, they are best run from outside. Yes, it looks like shit but you will save yourself a ton - why do you think Comcast or DTV run outside lines? Given the fact that most content nowadays is digital, you might be able to escape re-wiring all together via POE ... If you plan to network your TV's or computers without buying costly, and, to-date unreliable wireless technology, there are several options available to you. The best tech that comes to my mind is intranet-over-power lines. I forget the details of the GE products I use but I essentially have a hard wired connection between my modem, central server and all of my TV's. It work seemlessly for streaming content (which by the way I now only pay for) and normal content alike. In terms of your question regarding signal strength, any splitter attenuation less than 3db will work for you off of a standard input. I would however, for best service, recomend that the ensuing length be no longer than 10 ft for your mode and no more than 50 ft for any other installation before amplification
One thing I want to say, it is very hard discovered your blog because I had been researching information Related to home Electrician , but anyway, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this Informative and Amazing Stuffed Topic.I am hoping the same best work from you in the future as well keep it up!

I always consider home improvement an investment because my house is an investment. Would you consider this to be an investment because it will save money on electricity costs or simply because it is an update to the home?

For rewiring a house,we need an electrician who has been fully experienced. We should be careful that we don't try this.Because rewiring is risky work & it should be done by a experienced electrician.
I have a small 1 bedroom mobile home built probably in the late 70s it's probably 493 square ft or smaller I'm my sure but I need it rewired does anyone know about how much the materials are gonna cost alone to just put In wall plugs two ceiling fans a plug for washer dryer and stove and that's about it
Good question. For my home in Gulfstream Isles, I did hire a professional to work on our electricals. I didn't pay so much though because he's my friend's cousin.

Great informative post
It is wise to begin by getting referrals for licensed electrical contractors from friends and relatives.
Also - always ensure to get the estimate from the contractor in writing before choosing one and moving forward with your project.

If you gonna use an amplifer for a cable modem it has to be a 2 way amp which can be pretty pricey.
Thank you very much for your help, this site has been a great respite from the books,

Who still uses a VCR??
am moving into a 3 bed terrace in Fife and was wondering what a reasonable price would be to get the whole place rewired.
And if anyone knows anyone good and fairly priced in the fife area I'd appreciate it.
These fans are doing a good job for ventilation. it is now in a great need. but they must be maintained at regular intervals.
